Computer Clock and Calendar are extremely wrong?
I just found yesterday that when I leave my computer off for long periods of time (well, about one day), the clock and calendar are far off when I return. Far off as in all the way in 2011 off. I do remove the main battery for my laptop at night, but I have done that in the past to no ill effect.
For some reason, the clock only comes out wrong when left off for long periods off time. Rebooting seconds after the computer shuts off has no problem. I am wondering if my CMOS battery is dead and no longer to keep time.
If it helps, I am using an HP dv6663cl laptop with some of the parts upgraded. My Windows Vista installation is also somewhat compromised, but has been for quite a while before this happened.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Thanks for the quick and informative replies, I appreciate it.
Yep, sounds like the CMOS battery needs replacing, but to be on the safe side (some malware can cause this)....
Download, install, update and run full scans, in safe mode*, with these programs...
http://www.malwarebytes.org
http://www.superantispyware.com
Then re-start.
If you can't run a scan, go into the scanner's folder and re-name the .exe file to something like 'MyFile.exe' and try in safe mode again. Some malware prevent the execution of anti spy/mal/virus scans by blocking them by name.
*Note: On start up (before Windows loads) keep tapping either F5 or F8 then use arrow keys to highlight 'Safe Mode with networking' click on a user account, enter the password (if you don't know it, there probably isn't one so leave it blank) and hit enter/return.
