is it a good idea to learn to fly a petrol radio controlled airplane without an instructor?
i am getting a radio controlled plane for xmas and was going to try and fly it with only some written instructions off the internet and some advice from some people. I have a field i can practise in legally as its privately owned.
Don't do it! You will crash the model even if you manage to get it started. I know! I am in America and I have been flying R/C for a very long time.
Please! If you are considering going ahead with your idea, learn ALL about model airplanes from a local R/C club in your area. Most clubs welcome new people into the club and have an experience member to show you the basics. They will help you get it started properly and take it off for you, fly it , trim it out, then let you take control to see how you do. If it starts to head toward mother earth, they will save it from crashing.
Some things about model airplanes you should be aware of:
The propeller normally spins at between 12,000 and 20,000 rpm. If you get your fingers caught in it, it will take them off!
You will destroy the engine if you do not set the mixture control right,i.e., too lean it will quit in flight, to rich, it will sag and quit.
Takeoff is optional, landing is mandatory.
All models when first flown must be trimmed in flight to fly straight and level.
A radio frequency range check must be performed with the engine running and the antenna down, from 50 feet away from the model.
The model must be secured from moving foward by a second person or some other means until you are ready for takeoff.
Support equipment includes:
Electric starter or "Chicken Stick" ( a stick about 8" long with a rubber hose on the front that you use to turn the prop to start the engine)
A battery and glow clip, to provide a means to light the glow plug while starting the engine.
A means to pump fuel into the fuel tank.
Well, that's just a few of the things to consider. I hope you can get properly prepared and have a great time flying your model. It's a fantastic hobby.
Good Luck.
